Grayson by Lisa Eugene

All she needed was a job…
The last thing twenty-four year old grad student Angie Roberts needs is to worry about her new boss’s father. After all, she’s never even seen him. He remains sequestered upstairs in a house that looks like it should be the main feature in an episode of Hoarders. She had no idea the house was such a dump when she took the job. But she’s concerned about the safety and health of the old man living under such horrid conditions.

What she got was a mystery…
Despite warnings not to venture upstairs, she wanders up to the second floor. What she sees is shocking. The man she finds is a gorgeous, sexy, middle-aged man-- and he's stepping out of the shower. But something is definitely not right. Why would this wealthy, handsome man live in a house in such disrepair while his nine-teen year old son resides in a lavish penthouse? Why does he hide away from society? Why does he come to her rescue and then run away?

What she discovered was heartbreaking…
Angie learns that forty-four year old Grayson Whitmore suffers from schizophrenia. Paranoid, he retreats into his own world.

What she ended up with was a treasure…
Angie is determined to get through to him. They form a friendship that blazes into an inconceivable love fired with erotic passion. Angie must now come to Grayson’s rescue because the wicked that has been perpetrated on him is unconscionable. First, though, she must gain the trust of a man whose mind does not allow for such a thing.

REVIEW

Can I tell you how much I fell in love with Grayson? He is hot and haunted. The scene where Angie sees him for the first time, well spies on him really, is one of the hottest scenes in the book.

Angie is starting a new job. She's cleaning out a house. Her boss, a nineteen year old playboy that skeeves Angie out, has assured her that his father will not be a problem as long as she stays on the first floor. Curiosity may have killed the cat but when Angie makes her way up those stairs what she finds turns her world upside down. She expected a sixty year old withered man, what she got was a forty year old sex god.

Grayson lost his wife a few years ago to a car accident. Up until then he had a mild case of schizophrenia and was dealing well with the world, but losing his wife caused his disease to take over his world. He refuses to take his meds and he stays locked in his house. His paranoia causes him to build a fortress of books and he is afraid of his son.

After the initial jaw dropping meeting, Angie and Grayson start to build a friendship, but the sexual tension is growing. Angie is determined to help Grayson and understand his world. When pushed into a corner by his son Grayson loses it and is committed to the same hospital where Angie works.

Can Angie's love and patience save Grayson? Can he fight his way through the voices to make it back to her?

This story is well written and I couldn't put it down. If you are looking for a different type of hero this is the book for you. I assure you Grayson is worth the read!

Early Sunday morning, I crawled out of bed in search of Grayson. I discovered him upstairs in the room with the books. They were piled all around him as he scratched at something on the floor with an old shovel. The room was saturated with an early morning chill, so thick I could feel it seeping through my skin. I hugged my torso, scrubbing my palms up and down my arms. I approached him hesitantly and asked what he was doing. My heart was in my throat because I never knew what to expect with Grayson. He stopped and leaned against the handle, his cloudy gaze finding my face. He was fully dressed. He must have gotten dressed again after we’d made love earlier.

“Digging,” he acknowledged casually. “Digging a trap.”

I swallowed hard, emotion stacking like bricks in my chest. I shook my head, my mind grasping for purchase, trying to understand. “A trap for what, Grayson?”

“Danger. I have to be prepared. I have to protect us.”

I reached out a hand, trying to keep it steady. “You’re safe, Grayson.”

His gaze shifted to my proffered hand, but he didn’t move. He didn’t believe me. Fear and skepticism drew a roadmap of worry on his face. His jaw squared and he tightened his lips into a brittle line. I watched his body uncurl as he grabbed the shovel and silently started scraping at the floor again. That’s when I saw it. There was a large, jagged crater in the dusty wood that must have been covered up by the scattered books. It was directly over the small cracks I’d seen in the ceiling downstairs, the network of spider veins I’d noticed soon after starting here. I wondered how long he’d been working at this trap. I could already see exposed beams and fluffy insulation. If he kept this up, eventually he’d put a hole right through the wood floor.

“Go back to bed, Angie.”

“I’m not going anywhere. I’m staying with you, Grayson,” I said sternly, plopping myself down on the floor next to him.

He stopped again and stared at me, his blue eyes almost cobalt in the gray dawn. His hair was a loose mane framing his face, giving him an unruly look. “You’ll be tired. You haven’t gotten much sleep.”

I squeezed my eyes shut, hurting, thinking of the reason I’d been up most of the night. We’d held each other, made exquisite love, bathed in a temporary utopia where I could pretend he was okay.
But Grayson wasn’t okay, and as I spent more time with him, I realized the extent of his fractured thoughts. My Grayson was funny and brilliant. My Grayson was tender and passionate. My Grayson could melt my heart with the tiniest smile. But this man, too, was my Grayson, a man who was sometimes out of touch with reality, who lived in the distorted world concocted by his brain. It was a world of doubt, fear, and distrust.

Lisa Eugene began writing as a way to mentally escape from the hectic medical world where she has been a practicing nurse for over twenty years. After publishing her first novel, STRICTLY BUSINESS, she quickly learned that readers couldn't get enough of the world she created and now she lives out her wildest fantasies by writing steamy romantic suspense for her fan-favorite Washington Memorial Hospital series.

When she's not plotting her next dangerous, fast-paced, sexy adventure, you can find her juggling a full time job, playing soccer mom, or curled up reading a good romance.

Review

Melanie's father was killed by a freak accident before she was born. Her mom raised her all by herself and has never shown an interest in dating. Melanie has always felt the need to be the perfect daughter, unfortunately however how much she tries she'll always be a size sixteen. Melanie has really never had a boyfriend so when the hot guy she works with at the computer lab flirts with her she can't believe he really wants her.

Bryan may seem like he has it all figured out by with a psycho ex that can't seem to get the word "No" into her head and some family problems that he keeps bottled up inside, life isn't all hearts and kisses. He falls hard for Melanie and doesn't really understand why she doesn't love herself as much as he loves her. To him she is perfect.

When a misunderstanding over winter break happens the two breakup. Melanie has to learn to love herself and Bryan needs to deal with his family. Can the love they feel for each other bring them back together?

This is the third book in the Love series.  You do not need to read the first two to enjoy this book but it will give you a little background on Melanie if you do. And it's always fun to look at the other characters from the first two books in a different light. As always from Melissa the characters are well thought out and defined. I love that the relationship grows and it's not an instantaneous thing. I have always had trouble with my weight so I bonded with Melanie from the beginning. I've lived through a many of the feelings she goes through and I'm sure a lot of you have as well. Let's face it, most of us are not that perfect Barbie doll we see pictured in magazines and on TV, but we need to be okay with that. It sometimes takes a lot longer for us to be comfortable sharing our imperfect bodies with another person and this struggle is brought out well in this book. I always look forward to reading Melissa's books and this one is no different. I encourage you to check it out for yourself.

About the Author

Headshot
Melissa Collins has always been a book worm. Studying Literature in college ensured that her nose was always stuck in a book. She followed her passion for reading to the most logical career choice: English teacher. Her hope was to share her passion for reading and the escapism of books to her students. Having spent more than a decade in front of a classroom, she can easily say that it’s been a dream. Her passion for writing didn’t start until more recently. When she was home on maternity leave in early 2012, she read her first romance novel and her head filled with the passion, angst and laughter of the characters who she read about it. It wasn’t long before characters of her own took shape in her mind. Their lives took over Melissa’s brain and The Love Series was born.

Release Day Blitz ~ Vanishing Dreams by Nicole Edwards

Synopsis
Dalton Calhoun hadn’t always planned on a life up on the big stage, beneath the bright lights, but that was where he found himself. A second chance of sorts. An opportunity that had come along after his real dreams vanished when he was eighteen years old. Although country music was more than he could’ve expected, he’d never dismissed the notion that there was still something missing.

When Dalton followed his buddy Cooper Krenshaw to Devil’s Bend, Texas, it didn’t take long before Dalton realized just what that was. But just because he has topped the country music charts, and made his fair share of women swoon, doesn’t mean that everything comes easy to him. And when he sets his sights on the black-haired, gray-eyed waitress at The Rusty Nail, Dalton realizes he might just have to work for what he wants.

Katie Clarren’s life has been a series of unfortunate events, starting from the time her mother left on her eighteenth birthday. Not exactly how she had planned to spend one of the major turning points in her young life. Nor had she planned to spend the next five years dealing with the fallout. Somewhere along the way, Katie adapted, doing exactly what she needed to do in order to survive. But Katie has secrets that even her closest friends don’t know. Secrets she has worked hard to protect.

Although she longs for handsome, charming, country music sensation, Dalton Calhoun, she knows that anything that starts between them can’t last. Too bad her heart doesn’t seem to be on the same page. Katie gives in to her love for Dalton, needing that human connection that has been missing for so long. But when it comes time to make the hard decisions, Katie forces herself to walk away from him. To protect her secrets, and him. The last thing she wants to do is hurt Dalton, no matter how much pain she has to endure in the process. She loves him.

Can the two of them overcome the secrets and lies? Can they look to the future and stop living in the past? Or will they keep dwelling on the dreams that vanished, not seeing what is right in front of them? Each other.
